FAQs
How do fiberglass-reinforced plastic access covers compare to cast iron covers?
Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) access covers are significantly lighter than traditional cast iron, enabling safe, single-person removal without the need for heavy lifting machinery. Furthermore, FRP composite covers are highly corrosion-resistant and have zero scrap value, which completely eliminates the risk of theft across municipal utility networks.
Do ThruBeam® composite manhole covers meet vehicular load requirements?
Yes. ThruBeam® FRP manhole covers deliver proven AASHTO H25-rated load performance, ensuring they safely support heavy vehicular traffic while remaining lightweight for ergonomic access.
How do FRP access covers lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?
Facility owners benefit from a 30+ year maintenance-free lifecycle. By eliminating the need for rust removal and repainting, minimizing the requirement for specialized lifting crews, and stopping theft replacement costs, FRP covers deliver a significantly lower TCO compared to legacy metal options.
How easily can composite access covers be removed for maintenance?
Fibergrate's FRP access covers are significantly lighter than traditional cast iron, and are specifically designed for a safe, single-person lift. It means panels can be easily removed for maintenance access without the need for heavy lifting machinery.
How do I attach grating clips when underside access is limited?
For applications where reaching the underside of the access cover or flooring is not possible, we offer specialized top-access fastener options. These allow contractors to secure the panels quickly and safely from above.
Can Fibergrate provide large-scale access flooring systems?
Yes. Beyond individual manhole covers, we supply complete, large-scale access floor systems for data centers, telecommunications facilities, and utility projects requiring non-conductive, RF-transparent support structures.
What is covered grating, and is it used for access covers?
Covered grating is a molded FRP panel with a solid fiberglass plate bonded to the top. It is frequently used for access covers and trench covers because it provides a strong, slip-resistant, and completely solid surface that prevents odors from escaping and debris from falling into the structure below.
How do you seal the joints between multiple access cover panels?
If your access hatch or trench requires multiple panels of covered grating, the joints can be sealed using an appropriate chemical-resistant sealant or FRP joining kit to maintain a continuous, watertight, and vapor-tight surface.
Can Fibergrate design large access covers to be lifted by a crane or forklift?
Yes. While standard FRP covers are designed for a single-person manual lift, our engineering team can provide design support and custom fabrication for large-scale structural platform covers equipped with lifting hardware for crane or forklift removal.
